Sometimes the bit.ly system refuses to service a shorten request. It happens due to technical issues on their side and also due to rate limits that they apply.
Whenever our system is unable to shorten a link using bit.ly, it automatically falls back to shortening the link with our own internal link shortener, dld.bz. This automatic fallback is employed in bulk update uploads and RSS feeds.
We feel this is a better solution than leaving the long link in the update text and risk having the text rejected for being longer than the maximum allowed by the targeted social service.
