Why An Auction?

To be honest, we don't have the foggiest idea what this level of exposure is worth to you, and how much you'd be willing to pay. So, we decided to put the banners up for auction, so that the market can decide the ruling price in a fair and consistent manner.

How Does The Auction Work?

First of all, you must have a SocialOomph account (either Free or Professional), and you must have added the Twitter or StatusNet account you want to have featured. That's the only way to ensure that only the owner of an account can feature that account.

If you don't already have a SocialOomph account, please register an account now. It's 100% free.

Once you're logged in to your SocialOomph account, click the Auctions menu tab.

There you will see the currently active auctions, and you can immediately start bidding.

Automatic Bidding

When you enter a bid, you enter the maximum amount you want to bid.

SocialOomph has an automatic bidding system that will increment your bid until it is either the highest bid, or your maximum amount has been reached. Some people also know this automated method of bidding by the name of proxy bidding.

SocialOomph will only bid as much as you need to beat the previous highest bidder.

The automatic bid increments are:

Current price: $0.01 - $0.99, bid increment: $0.05
Current price: $1.00 - $4.99, bid increment: $0.25
Current price: $5.00 - $24.99, bid increment: $0.50
Current price: $25.00 - $99.99, bid increment: $1.00
Current price: $100.00 - $249.99, bid increment: $2.50
Current price: $250.00 - $499.99, bid increment: $5.00
Current price: $500.00 - $999.99, bid increment: $10.00
Current price: $1,000.00 - $2,499.99, bid increment: $25.00
Current price: $2,500.00 - $4,999.99, bid increment: $50.00
Current price: $5,000 and higher, bid increment: $100.00

Your winning bid will only be one bid increment higher than the second highest bid. It could and normally will be lower than the maximum amount you entered when you made your bid. However, never enter a bid (maximum amount) larger than what you are willing to pay. Never. If a bidding war breaks out, your maximum amount could be reached and you will be in a legally binding contract to pay that amount.

Your maximum amount remains hidden from everyone else until someone else enters a bid that is higher than your maximum amount, which means they become the highest bidder.

If you happen to enter exactly the same maximum amount as the maximum amount that the owner of the current highest bid entered, then the new automatic bid (at the maximum amount) of the current highest bidder is considered the highest (because it is the older one of the two).

There is one circumstance where your maximum amount can be exceeded. If you are the highest bidder and someone enters a bid with a maximum amount that differs by less than one bid increment from your maximum amount, the automated bidding system will place a bid for you that is one bid increment above the lower of your maximum amount or the contender's maximum amount. This happens once only. In other words, your maximum amount will never be exceeded by a full bid increment or more. If someone else then enters a bid higher than that current bid, you won't be the highest bidder any longer.

Transparency

These auctions are transparent, meaning you can see which Twitter or StatusNet account placed which bid. And since only the owner of the account can bid on an auction to feature that account, you know exactly who placed the bid.

You may find that there's an exposure benefit by simply participating in these auctions. The account names are hyperlinked to the Twitter or StatusNet profile on the Auctions page and on the Bid History page.

Bid Retraction

As long as you are the highest bidder, you can retract your bid at any time up to 12 hours prior to the end of the auction. Within the last 12 hours of the auction, you can only retract your bid within 60 minutes of entering the bid.

What If You Win An Auction?

The first thing you must do is pay the full amount of the winning bid. The Auctions menu tab page will tell you the deadline for payment. We provide you 48 hours after auction closure to make your payment. We only accept payments via PayPal.

Once you've paid, you just need to wait for the date and time when your profile will be displayed. Everything happens automatically.

If you fail to pay in full before the time that your profile featuring is scheduled to start, you will not be allowed to participate in these auctions for a full 180 days, and your profile banner will also not be displayed. We have a fully automated system. We cannot override it and accept late payments.

Please read the auction terms and conditions before you place a bid on an auction.

How Many New Followers Will You Gain?

You may have noticed that we have not, nor will we, make any promises regarding new followers resulting from a featured profile. That's because your profile, and your profile alone will determine how many new followers you will gain. If you have a great profile and tweet content, the number of new followers will obviously be more than if you have a spammy profile and tweet content.

What we give you is a powerful means of getting your profile noticed. That includes the hyperlink to your external website that you can enter on your profile. The rest is entirely in your hands. We provide no guarantees that you will get any results from the profile banner, since that entirely depends on the content and nature of your profile.
